An apparent road rage incident on the 5/57 freeway interchange on Friday night led to a shootout in front of La Habra police headquarters that left the suspect dead and an officer wounded, authorities said.

As of Saturday afternoon, the officer, who had been in critical condition, was "alert and recovering from his injuries," according to La Habra police. His identity was not released, but he was described as a 5-year veteran of the police force in his 30s.

La Habra Police Chief Adam Foster said he spoke with the injured officer Saturday morning.

"I did manage to speak with him earlier today and that's always a good sign," he said.

Foster said dispatchers on Friday night received a call about a road rage incident that had occurred at the interchange between the 5 and 57 freeways. The dispatchers directed the caller to the La Habra police station, he said.

It is believed the driver made the call in the vicinity of the city. The caller told dispatchers she was being followed by another vehicle, police spokesman Lt. Jose Rocha said;  the suspect was thought to be in the car pursuing her.

A surveillance image released by police Saturday showed a man dressed in a black shirt and black pants holding a gun in his right hand near the doorway to the station prior to the fatal confrontation with police.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office, which investigates officer-involved shootings within its jurisdiction, was probing the shooting.

A firearm was found at the scene, police said. The identity of the man killed was not immediately released, and details surrounding the violence were not provided.

Police believe the officer was struck by the suspect's gunfire, but the DA's office will ultimately make that determination, Rocha said.

People in the area near police headquarters at La Habra Boulevard and Euclid Avenue reported hearing gunshots around 7 p.m., and investigators were interviewing neighbors and police officers who were on scene.

Isabel Gonzales, 28, said she was watching a movie with family members about 7 p.m. Friday when she heard four or five loud pops.

"We looked at each other and I said 'Fireworks?' " Gonzales said. "Nothing ever happens here, it's a safe neighborhood and we're right across from the police station."

She went outside and saw two sedans parked in front of the station doors, she said. Some officers were taking cover behind the sedans while others were loading an injured officer into a patrol car.

As he was being placed in the patrol car, a woman was running southbound on Euclid toward La Habra.

"(She wasn't) screaming or anything, but she looked frightened," Gonzales said.

In front of the doors, Gonzales saw a man in black pants lying motionless, she said.

"I heard like three gunshots, I thought it was just fireworks," a neighbor, Veronica Carillo, told CBS Los Angeles. "I went out running and I heard some female, like I don't know, but it sounds like a female, and she said, 'Drop the gun now.' "

At the police station on Saturday, an evidence marker remained above a patch on a frame of double doors at the entranceway. One door was boarded up.
