How to Decorate Twigs for Christmas
DIY Christmas Decorations made from Twigs!
We are all trying to have a more sustainable Christmas this year and while searching for handmade decoration inspo (thank you pinterest) we came across a whole load of creative DIY christmas decoration ideas made from twigs.
We thought it would be nice to share these ideas with you as a fun festive activity to try and because well
…. we're Twig!
Note: You could try using actual Twigs for this but we highly recommend saving them for brushing your teeth as they will be much better at this!
You will need:
Twigs
Whatever you can find!
We recommend using short and skinny ones for the more intricate ornaments.
String or Twine
For securing corners and hanging ornaments.
Maybe also some coloured string or thread to brighten up the natural ornaments!
Scissors
To cut the string, any will work!
Glue
We recommend using a glue gun as it dries instantly but PVA and other slow drying glues will also work.
What to make:
Twig Stars
Glue the corners together and allow to dry before tying with string to ensure the stars stay secure for a long time.
Smaller and skinny Twigs work best for elegant looking stars.
Twig Reindeer
How cute are these! Save a couple of wonky Twigs for the antlers.
Glue a few short twigs together to make the body, add the legs making sure it can stand up on its own and attach the antlers last.
Tip - Wrap twine around the joins to further secure in place and hide the glued areas once the reindeer has dried.
Mini Twig Christmas Trees
Use glue or twine to attach three twigs together in a triangle shape, plus a small twig at the base if you like.
Wrap coloured string or twine around to brighten them up!
Perfect as hanging ornaments.
Twig Candle Holders
Use your empty glass jars as table decorations!
Simply glue some twigs on the outside of the jar and pop a tea light inside.
You could attach a coloured ribbon to the outside for some extra flair.
Wall Hanging Twig Christmas Tree
Pick up some larger twigs and branches for this one, secure twigs with twine at each end to create a Christmas tree shape.
This idea is perfect for rooms where space is limited, attach to wall, light it up and hang decorations for the full effect!
Stand Alone Twig Tree
Another great alternative to a traditional Christmas tree, use a mix of bare branches and evergreen foliage for a more leafy look.
Tip - Use some rocks or gravel to secure branches into the base.
Twig Wreaths
Possibly one of the more fiddly designs but the end result is spectacular!
Cut out a cardboard ring to secure twigs to at the back of the wreath, allow plenty of drying time before hanging.
Hanging Twig Centrepiece
Simple but effective!
Secure at each end and hang from ceiling or up against a wall.
Try to balance ornaments to keep it level!
Bottle Twigs
We all tend to drink more at Christmas, whether its lemonade or something stronger, save the glass bottles and try this idea - no equipment needed!
Tip - dangle some fairy lights in the bottles to make them really sparkle.
We'd love to see how you get on with your twig decorations!
Share them with us on social media, #happytwigmas and our team will be having a go at home too!
