Supplies For How To Make A Wrap Skirt With Free Pattern

  • Fabric Selection :  60" wide fabrics – lightweight linen and cottons, rayon
  • Iron
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Optional Rotary Cutter & Mat
  • Measuring tape
  • Thread nippers
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching Thread
  • Fabric marker

Whether you decide to make this wrap skirt in Small, Medium, or Large, you'll need about 1.5 yards of 60-inch wide fabric. See the size chart below to see which size will work best for you.

Pattern Pieces Checklist

The printable pattern is listed in imperial measurements (inches) and consists of the following pattern pieces:

  • Back Skirt – Cut one on fold
  • Front Skirt – Cut 2 mirror images
  • Waistband – Back Skirt – Cut 1
  • Waistband / tie  long  – Cut 1 on fold
  • Waistband / tie  short  – Cut 1 on fold

Wrap Skirt Pattern Printing Instructions

This pattern has layers, so that you can choose to print only the size you need. To achieve this Adobe Reader must be installed on your machine or device. Adobe Reader allows you to click on the layers icon which will show you each size with an eyeball beside it. Click on the eyeball beside the size you do not want to print.

Before printing check that your printer is set to No scaling or Actual size. Set the Page orientation to Auto or Portrait. And then print page 1. Measure the 2" test square to see if it measures exactly 2". If it does, print the remaining pages. Make sure you cut off the right and top margins of each printed page before assembling the pattern so it assembles correctly. You can use tape or school glue to adhere your paper pattern together.

Wrap Skirt Pattern Assembly

There are 20 pages to print in this pattern. Use the quarter circles located at the corner of each page for perfect alignment.  Each row goes across for 10 pages. The finished length of this skirt is 26" for all sizes.  To determine if this length is right for you. Measure from your natural waist to your knee.  If your measurement is more than 26" you will need to add the extra length to the pattern piece. If it is less and you want to shorten the skirt, remove the difference from the length of the pattern piece. The skirt has a 3/8" seam allowance and  hem allowance

How To Make A Wrap Skirt With Free Pattern

Start this fun wrap skirt sewing project by printing out and assembling the pattern. Cut out your fabric according to the instructions on the pattern pieces and lay out the waistband and skirt pieces.

Take the back waistband pattern piece and transfer the pattern markings to it. These markings are very important, so take your time and copy them directly from the pattern.

Place your skirt back right side up, place each of your skirt front pieces on the back skirt with right sides together and pin at the side seams. Be sure that your front skirt pieces have the curved edges pointing to the centre of the skirt. Sew your skirt together at the side seams. Finish the seams with a zigzag stitch. This will help give your wrap skirt durable edges.

Next on this how to make a wrap skirt sewing tutorial, set your sewing machine to the longest stitch and sew 3/8" along the raw edge of one of the front skirt piece starting from the top of the waist to the side seam.  This stitch will help you to fold the curved areas of the skirt more smoothly. Repeat for the other front skirt piece.

Fold the hem wrong sides together along the basting stitch. Press if desired. Fold again another 3/8" and pin. Sew the hem all the way around the skirt.

Now it is time to make the waistband for your wrap skirt! Pin the long waistband / tie pieces  to the back waistband that does not have the markings. Pin the short waistband/tie piece to the other end of the back waistband that has the markings. Use the pattern markings on the back waistband as a guide to sew the waistbands together – you will not sew in between the markings and you will only sew one side  waistband following the markings. The other end of the waistband will be fully sewn.  Be sure to back stitch at the beginning and the end when sewing the waistband together.

Press open the seam of the waistband with the opening and stitch around it to secure.

Fold and press both of the long raw edges wrong sides together by 3/8". Then fold the waistband in half and press. You are about halfway through this how to make a wrap skirt sewing tutorial.

To conceal the raw edges at the end of the waistband – unfold the ironed edges, fold the waistband right sides together, sew along the short edge.

Turn right sides out. The waistband for your wrap skirt is now complete.

Now with the waistband done, it is time to add it to the skirt! With the right side of the waistband facing the wrong side of the skirt, unfold the ironed edge of the waistband and pin it to the skirt. The back waistband seams should align with the skirt side seams.

You will also continue to pin the waistband ties all the way to the end of the waistband. Sew the waistband to the skirt.

Fold the waistband to the right side of the skirt, pin the waistband to the skirt on the previously sewn seam. You will also continue to pin the waistband ties all the way to the end of the waistband. Sew the waistband to the skirt starting from one end of the tie to the next..

And your wrap skirt is done! To wear your skirt, open it wide and place the skirt back in position, the side seams should be at your side, located the opening left in the waistband and insert the tie from the opposite side through the opening. Bring the tie around your back until it is now at your side seam. You will now tie it to the other end of the skirt. This is such a cute skirt. Pair it with your favorite tops for your own unique look!
